My goal for this image was to achieve a fairly balanced subject exposure with the landscape background through the pergola. After locking in on my +1 EV ambient exposure, the exposure of the foliage wrapping the pergola naturally dropped well under my background exposure enhancing the contrast of the natural vegetative frame in the overall image. Lighting was a Yongnuo 560 ii in a 24”x24” softbox to camera left. A few rays of dappled sunlight peaked through the trees to add a few highlights to the final image as well.
The pose? Not so sure, perhaps her ‘tough cookie’ look? She was feeling under the weather at the time so our photography fun was cut short that day.

This image is from the first shoot with the Paul Buff Einsteins, Vagabond mini and 64″ white PLM umbrella. What a great portable combination this trio packs. The PLM used as a shoot through provided a nice wrap that complimented the available light. To make this shoot possible, I had to make a deal…I was allowed to take pictures as long as I promised to do a few laps around the yard in the wagon, oh and unlimited popsicles too. She drives a hard bargain.
A few weeks ago we were itching to have a landscape day. After about an hour of discussion, we came up with a list of 4-5 different spots within a 3 hour radius. After loading the car up and grabbing lunch, of course we decided to stay local and hit up the area Reservoir. I think we ended up making a good choice and made a fun day trip out of it. Its funny how local gems can get overlooked so easily.
This was a 19 second exposure @ f/16, ISO 50 with the Lee Big Stopper.
Doyles River Falls at Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.
Well worth the 2.7 mile round trip hike down and back up the steep and narrow trails. This is a shot of the stream leading to the upper portion of the falls where most of the crowds tend to gather. A cool overcast day along with the tree coverage provided an evenly lit scene. This shot was at 1.6 seconds @ f/18, ISO 50 with a 2 stop ND.
Captured this image with the 70-200 while Matt awaited patiently on deck. T2i, 200 mm, 1/1000 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 640.
